In the past, Nintendo has issued system updates intended to improve performance but also remove “unauthorized channels or firmware may impair game play or the Wii console.” The focus of this article will to show you how to install HBC and HackMii soft mods on the latest and presumably last Wii system update (4.3), with a simple exploit called LetterBomb. To that end, we might think of the Homebrew Channel as an app launcher channel, which means you can copy special apps and games to your SD card and launch them through the HBC. For example, the Netflix channel on the Wii is nothing more than a glorified Netflix app, and so on. Channels are nothing more really than Nintendo’s version of apps. So when you open a channel, all it’s going to do is give you extended functionality above and beyond just playing games.
So what is the Homebrew Channel? It’s simply what it sounds like, a channel, much like the Netflix or Nintendo eShop. It’s really hard to brick a Wii this way, but it could happen. When you click on a game you are given these options: When WiiFlow detects games, they are displayed in flow view. You can download game covers by going to “Settings” then “Download Covers and Banners”. You can toggle between viewing Wii games, GameCube games, Wii Channels, Plugins, Homebrew apps by clicking the button second to last button on the right. This can be changed by going in to settings, startup settings then turn off “Mount SD Only”. WiiFlow by default is set to only find games on the SD card. You should be able to figure out all the great features of WiiFlow by using it. This is intended to help you learn how to use it, by giving you a quick start. This is not a full comprehensive guide on using WiiFlow. Insert your USB drive, and SD card if you’re using one, into your Wii and launch WiiFlow from the Homebrew Channel. Extract WiiFlow and put the apps and WiiFlow folders on your USB drive or SD card. Do not format it as other types such as extFS or WBFS, the latter is an old format of storing Wii games. Make sure your USB drive and/or SD card is formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Unlike USB Loader GX, WiiFlow can load games of an SD card. Flash drives should be usable too, but external hard drives are recommended as they are more reliable, and can store more games. To play games, we recommend using an external hard drive for your Wii. If you are not copying games using Wii Backup Manager, Witgui, or Wii Backup Fusion, make a folder on the root of the USB drive or SD card named “wbfs” and put the games in there.
You can also use a development build of Dolphin, right click on a game, and use “Convert File” to convert it.
